Swamp Canyon
Great Ophir Hike
This lightly-trafficked trail starts just east of the town of Ophir and climbs up to the top of Swamp Canyon. Hikers have the option to hike to a scenic overlook 2.7 miles up the trail, or continue on towards Grant-Swamp Pass. The scenic overlook offers stunning views, wildflowers and waterfalls and sits just below U.S. Grant Peak and South Lookout Peak. Only the most experienced hikers should continue on towards the Grant-Swamp pass, as the trail becomes challenging to find and involves an extremely steep, rocky scramble gaining 1,200 ft in elevation in just the last .2 miles. Route finding on the entirety of this trail can be challenging and navigation skills may be necessary.
Directions:
Travel .6 miles up Ophir Pass (4WD vehicle required). Just past the east side of the avalanche chute, there is a two-track road branching to the right. This road is the starting point for the hike. Please note that there is no designated parking for the Swamp Canyon hike and it is important to think about transportation ahead of time.
