Wade Davis Returns to Mountainfilm for 2024
Wade Davis returns to Telluride as Guest Director for the 2024 edition of Mountainfilm, which will be held May 23 - 27.
Wade Davis is Professor of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia, and was the Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society between 2000 - 2013. An ethnographer, writer, photographer and filmmaker, Davis holds degrees in anthropology and biology and received his Ph.D. in ethnobotany, all from Harvard University. "He is one of the most dynamic and fascinating speakers to ever grace the stage at Mountainfilm, with a wealth of experience ranging from field research on the traditional use of psychotropic drugs, to vodou in Haiti, to the mystery of George Mallory's disappearance," says Suzan Beraza, Mountainfilm Director.
Davis has a rich history with Mountainfilm, and was involved in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2014. In addition to being the Guest Director, he will also be unveiling his latest book, Beneath the Surface of Things, at Mountainfilm.
While Davis' return is a highlight of the festival, Beraza says there is a lot more to be excited about. "Attendees can expect a diverse selection of documentaries featuring important stories from around the world, engaging speaker presentations, and impactful panel discussions, along with community engagement including art, music, outdoor activities and even free ice cream!"
Film submissions are still being reviewed, but Beraza promises the caliber of films they've seen so far has been remarkable. The full lineup is expected to be announced in May, with additional announcements about special guests, speakers and additional events sprinkled throughout the months prior to the big announcement.
"What we love about Mountainfilm is that each year it's like putting on the festival for the first time, as the guests and attendees are a new and exciting mix of people of many different backgrounds, interests and specialties," she adds. "We're looking forward to the magic that will be made this year as part of the giant puzzle that makes the festival a truly remarkable event."
